Workstation setup

Joins a fresh Ubuntu Desktop (24.04 or newer) to the tailnet as a shared workstation, so engineers can manage it remotely over Tailscale SSH.

Install

Open a terminal on the workstation (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run:

wget -qO- https://workstation.klungs.in/install.sh | sudo bash

To give the workstation its own tailnet name instead of its hostname:

wget -qO- https://workstation.klungs.in/install.sh | sudo bash -s -- --hostname ws01

What happens

  1. The script installs Tailscale from its official Ubuntu repository.
  2. It shows a login link and a QR code in the terminal.
  3. Scan the QR code with your phone and sign in with an engineer account.
  4. The workstation joins as tag:workstation. Connect to it with ssh root@<name>.gg.klungs.in.

Sign in on your phone, not in this workstation's browser, so your session doesn't stay here for the next user.

Before running

You can read the script first. It holds no secrets: only an engineer's sign-in lets the workstation join. Running it again on a workstation that has already joined only re-applies its settings.
